1776
Colonel Henry Knox completed one of the war's most remarkable logistical feats on this day. Knox arrived at General Washington's camp in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with 59 heavy cannons and mortars seized from Fort Ticonderoga. The artillery had been transported 300 miles across frozen lakes and over the Berkshire Mountains on ox-drawn sleds. These guns were later positioned on Dorchester Heights, directly leading to the British evacuation of Boston in March 1776.
1781
Patriot commanders Lieutenant Colonel Lee and Brigadier General Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion combined forces for a daring surprise attack. Patriot forces arrived at British-occupied Georgetown, South Carolina undetected. They successfully captured several high-ranking British officers, including the commandant of the garrison, though they lacked the strength to fully occupy the town.
