1737
The most prominent event of this day is the birth of John Hancock in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts. Hancock served as the President of the Second Continental Congress and was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. He later became the first and third Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
1781
On this day in 1781, negotiations began between the mutinous soldiers of the New Jersey Line and their officers to end their revolt. A committee of three sergeants, led by Sergeant Major George Grant, met with Colonel Elias Dayton and other commissioners in Chatham. The soldiers demanded the same discharge terms given to the Pennsylvania Line mutineers weeks earlier. Colonel Dayton flatly refused the demand for mass discharges but offered full pardons to all men who immediately returned to their duty. The soldiers signaled their acceptance of these terms. Although this seemed to end the mutiny, General Washington would eventually use force to fully suppress the uprising days later to prevent further unrest.
A minor engagement occurred in Allendale County, South Carolina, resulting in a British victory.
