On January 30, 2020, at approximately 12:30 AM, PO Murphy and PO Carr were assigned to the Crime Suppression Unit for Field Training when they observed a vehicle driving south on FER Blvd at a high rate of speed. Police closed the distance and got behind the vehicle on FER Blvd and Bergen Street when the vehicle crossed over from the left lane of traffic and made a right turn on Bergen Street. Police stopped the vehicle on Bergen Street at the base of the Route 280 Ramp. Upon approaching the vehicle, police detected a strong odor of marijuana. PO Carr spoke to the driver while PO Murphy spoke to the front seat passenger. While PO Murphy was speaking to the passenger, he admitted that the driver was an Uber Driver and that the weed was indeed a possession of the front seat passenger. When asked to step out of the vehicle, the passenger refused. PO Murphy opened the front, passenger door and observed the front seat passenger reach across his body and at that time PO Murphy maintained control of the suspect’s wrist and began to remove him from the vehicle with the assistance of PO Lecca. While face down on the ground, the suspect continued to try to free his arms and grab something from the front, center of his waistband. The suspect was handcuffed and when police moved him, they recovered a semi-automatic handgun in the front, center of his waistband. Search incident to arrest, police also recovered suspected marijuana. The 19 year old male was charged with multiple weapons and CDS offences and turned over to the Hudson County Jail.
