On October 11 at 11AM, a Harrison resident received a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and suggesting that the victim was in some sort of trouble. The caller attempted to extort the victim by convincing him to purchase Google Play gift cards or he would be arrested. The caller also demanded that the victim confirm is social security number. Thankfully, the victim realized that he was being scammed and hung up the phone.
Residents are reminded that no legitimate government agency would make a phone call and threaten actions. The IRS is a very common scam wherein the caller convinces the victim to send money or buy gift cards that can be converted to cash. Never provide any identifying information over the phone; hang up immediately and contact the police.
